For 09-14 TL the Bluetooth module is buried down in center console. I am about to replace mine but interesting if the Homelink is what is causing the battery drain issues. The homelink module is up in the roof on that generation.

All due respect who is replacing a battery after only 8 years? Then again, why would anyone keep a car for 8 years? Cars depreciate and trade ins are recommended. If, and by the time, that battery dies, the car will have been no longer your problem for at least a decade. But good point, that's plenty of time for the world to simplify a technological advancement.

I wonder if something like a nodemcu would give better performance less latency. The driver for the stepper could also be an issue, some of the cheaper ones can be hit or miss. All in all if you're serious about the project upgrading to something more robust (semi industrial grade) would def. be the ticket and probably save you some wasted time. I'd feel a little sketchy taking an Arduino solution on the free-way even if you did track down all the bugs. Really cool project best of luck!
